Physical and mental conditions

If a long-term physical or mental condition prevents you from meeting the English, test or earnings requirements, you may be exempt. You are likely to need medical evidence. Detail on the evidence required is expected in guidance.

Exemptions do not change the character rules

No exemption covers criminality. An adult with a criminal record in the UK will still be refused.

Questions and answers

I turn 65 before I apply. Does that count?

Exemptions are normally assessed on the date of application. If you are 65 or over when you apply, the age exemption should apply.

Does a disability automatically exempt me?

Not automatically. The exemption applies where a condition prevents you meeting a particular requirement, and you will need evidence.
