Is the test staying?
Yes. Under Earned Settlement, passing the Life in the UK test remains a mandatory requirement for settlement, alongside B2 English. The Government has said the test is being reviewed to better reflect modern British life.
Who is exempt?
The same exemptions as now continue, including:
- children under 18
- people aged 65 and over
- people with a physical or mental condition that prevents them taking the test

Refugees who came through the UK Resettlement Scheme do not need to pass the test until a version at A2 English level is available. Refugees on other designated resettlement or sponsorship routes are not covered by this exemption.
Will I need to retake it?
There is no indication that people who have already passed will need to retake the test. Keep your pass reference safe, as you will need it when you apply.
